The bidding process took many months as the initial six applicants were gradually reduced to the final three.

Once it opens the casino will create 440 new jobs and it will do much to increase the wealth of the borough for many years after the Olympic Games have been consigned to history.

However there remain some points to be settled as both Great Eastern Quays Casino and Apollo Genting are both challenging Newham Council’s decision on the grounds that the Aspers proposal does not include local regeneration, and regional regeneration was imposed by the Gaming Act as a condition for building large casinos.

Whatever the outcome of the appeal, soon London will be able to boast of being home to the biggest casino in the UK.
